Just one month away from getting our two new bee colonies! Last weekend I went to a friends birthday party and met a couple that are bee keepers as well. I had been feeling pretty down about losing all three of my colonies, but my partner in crime and I had mustered up the strength to not give up and try again. After talking shop with our new bee friends, it turns out that last year was a pretty bad year for bees in our area and a lot of people lost hives. A lot of it had to do with the fires that consumed our county. The smoke was too much for them, and many colonies just up and left. Mites were another issue. So it wasn’t that we were bad beekeepers, it’s just the nature of …..nature. We are still going to change a few of our methods, but my confidence is back and now the countdown begins… 1 month until we meet our new queens!
