Yesterday Rachael and I were fortunate enough to be able to visit out first beehive! Up close and personal. John, a friend of Rachael and a first year beekeeper, invited us to visit his home and check out his young hive. The bees were located towards the back of his beautiful property surrounded by fruit trees. I have to say I was very excited and nervous. Apparently the exact feelings that you should not have while in the company of bees. I have learned that when you hang out with bees it is best to approach them calmly and quietly. Two things I am really going to have to practice. After a few deep breaths and also the threat of making them nervous I finally calmed down a bit. Rachael was much more composed, but I knew she was just as excited as I was. I also learned the hard way that bees have flight paths, and I have a tendency to stand right in the middle of those. I was very nervous driving to the location, but once there in the beautiful garden, my anxiety melted away. Standing there next to the beehive and watching the little sweeties buzz in and out had a very calming affect on me. It was mesmerizing. I am more confidant than ever that becoming a beekeeper will be a fantastic experience.
